-Mount Gay has been crafting rum longer than any other rum distillery in the world. Located in St. Lucy, a northern parish of Barbados atop a grassy hill – this is still the exact location where we make all of our rum today. -The first record of ‘rum’ appears in 1650 in Barbados, making Barbados the birthplace of rum. Two important deeds from 1654 and 1703 state that rum was already being produced on these dates at our Mount Gay estate, making Mount Gay the world’s oldest running rum distillery -Barbados, our home nation, is the easternmost island of the Caribbean, uniquely formed of coral limestone. Barbados is exposed to elements such as the famous Trade Winds and this distinctive terroir is ideal for growing sugarcane which became a huge part of the island’s economy in the sixteen hundreds. It is this terroir that imbues our rum with its singular taste and personality. -In 1773, John Sober, the owner of Mount Gilboa, enlisted Sir John Gay Alleyne to help manage the plantation and distillery. Sir John already had experience managing several other plantations, and unlike other owners he chose to manage his estates in person. He used his vast and unrivalled expertise to refine the distillation process and start producing a noticeably superior rum. -As a tribute to his great achievements, the Sober family renamed the Mount Gilboa estate in his honour. Today, the surrounding area beyond the boundaries of the distillery, which includes a small village community, is still officially called Mount Gay. -Sir John Gay Alleyne was a visionary, and as early as 1760, he saw the opportunity to create a superior rum at Mount Gay – a rum with which cheaper foreign products simply couldn’t compete. -Focusing purely on quality, he deployed ingenious and sophisticated methods of agriculture, sugar production and distillation to create a refined rum that would become renowned the world over. In the face of increased competition and rising duty, many plantations had shut down by the late 1890s. Those that remained were struggling to sell molasses and rum at a profit. Thanks to its visionary and sophisticated approach, Mount Gay is the only Barbados plantation distillery to survive to the present day.
